As long ago as the mid-19th century Rapallo made its name as a winter resort on the Gulf of Tigullio. In 1922 it was the site of historic negotiations between Germany and the Soviet Union leading to the signing of an international treaty of cooperation.
You can spend hours strolling along the beautiful Lungomare Vittorio Veneto promenade and then take a rest and some refreshment in one of the many street cafés.
The Castello, which was built in just one year in 1550 for defensive purposes, can be found in the port area. You can visit the narrow streets of the medieval town in the Vicolo dei Fondachi.
Close to the Piazza delle Nazioni lie the church of San Stefano and the Oratorio dei Bianchi with its fine collection of Ligurian processional crosses.
Villa Tigullio can be found in the Parco Comunale and houses the library, once visited by Ernest Hemingway, as well as the Museo del Merletto (Tue, Wed 15.00 – 18.45, Thu 09.30 – 12.30). It is dedicated to the art of lace-making which is still very popular in the area.
